About Movement Arts Institute (MAI)

Movement Arts Insitute began in the spring of 2004 when Andrew Baker teamed with the West Shore Recreation Commission to offer MAI Tai Chi classes. MAI quickly added new partners until they were teaching 15 classes a week in multiple locations throughout Cumberland County, PA.

The pandemic brought changes and challenges. During the shutdown period, MAI live-streamed classes from Andrew and Chloe's living room to help keep the Big Family active and connected.

When that period drew to a close, Andrew had to embrace new goals but he and Chloe still teach through the West Shore Recreation Commission and Hampden Recreation.
See our schedule for a listing of locations and times.

The MAI program was created by working with the students and fellow instructors, to craft a program using elements from Andrew's Tai Chi education as well as elements from his time in physical therapy.

At the heart of the program is a rotating set of lessons that include warm-ups, Tai Chi fundamental exercises, and the MAI deep breathing routine - all designed to improve health and increase understanding of moving the Tai Chi way.

The core lessons are combined with a variety of bare hand and weapons forms, Qigong, applications, theory, Tao readings, and meditations.

Movement Arts Institute created several of the forms they teach to provide a step-by-step path for people to start and continue their Tai Chi learning.
